Junior Science Opportunities
Summer Enrichment Program at UVA
In conjunction with the Curry School of Education, the University of Virginia announces the 36th year of its residential summer program for gifted and/or
high ability students. Students enrolled in grades 4-10 during the 2012/2013 school year may apply to attend a twelve day session. For a list of course descriptions, click here.
MIT Workshop
The TOPS Physics Workshop is a two-week program for high school students interested in science who are currently freshmen and sophomores. Participants will explore the physics of heat, energy, and light through hands-on activities and lessons taught by undergraduate physics students.

The Summer Academy for Mathematics and Science is a rigorous residential summer experience for good students who have a strong interest in math and science and want to become excellent students. Students who are entering their junior or senior year and are considering careers in engineering, science and other math-based disciplines are eligible to apply. Students must be at least 16 years old to participate in this program. The program will focus on creating interest in technical disciplines and building academic and personal skills to better prepare you for the college application process.
Separate tracks will be developed for each grade level. In addition to more traditional classroom instruction, students will be involved in hands-on
engineering and science projects that provide an opportunity for them to apply concepts and principles introduced in the classroom. The challenging academic environment and peer support for excellence in the classroom will build the self-confidence required to do well in high school and college. The goal of the program is to prepare students for admission to selective colleges and universities.

The Internship Program provides opportunities to inspire young scientists and other science professionals to work in all areas of the Institute. Interns are
assigned to a mentor who is a member of the Institute's faculty or senior staff. A research program/work experience is tailored to each participant's education level and capabilities. Interns are required to present a summary of their research/work experience to the Institute's staff at the conclusion of their Internship.
Summer Research Fellowships @ Mt. Desert Island Biological Laboratory
The High School Research Fellowship program is a hands-on, mentored laboratory experience for high school students interested in biology, medicine, or research.
Clark Scholar Program @ Texas Tech University
The Clark Scholar Program is an intensive seven week summer research program for highly qualified high school juniors and seniors. Research
areas:Agronomy, Animal Science, Biochemistry, Bilingual Education, Biological Sciences, Biophysics, Business, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Classical and Romance Languages, Education, Electrical Engineering, English, Food & Nutrition, History, Horticulture,
Human Development & Family Studies, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Music, Philosophy, Physics, Psychology, Range & Wildlife Management, Science Education, Theatre Arts
Stanford School of Medicine Summer Research Program
The program is an eight-week program in which high school students from diverse backgrounds are invited to perform basic research with Stanford culty, postdoctoral fellows, students and researchers on a medically-oriented project. The goals of the program include increasing interest in biological sciences and medicine in high school students, helping students to understand how scientific research is performed, and increasing diversity of students and researchers in the sciences.
SEAP Science & Engineering Apprenticeship Program
The apprentice program is designed to encourage students to pursue science and engineering careers; acquaint qualified high school students with the activities of Department of Navy (DoN) laboratories through summer science and engineering research experiences; to provide students with opportunities in and exposure to scientific and engineering practice and personnel not available in their school environment; to expose those students to DoN research and engineering activities and goals in a way that encourages a positive image and supportive attitude toward our defense community; and to prepare these students to serve as positive role models for their peers by encouraging other high school students to take more science and
math courses.
Research Science Institute @ MIT
Each summer, 80 of the world's most accomplished high school students gather at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for the Research Science Institute (RSI). RSI is the first cost-free to students, summer science & engineering program to combine on-campus course work in scientific theory with off-campus work in science and technology research. RSI scholars first participate in a week of intensive STEM classes with accomplished professors. The heart of RSI is the five week research internship where students conduct individual projects under the tutelage of mentors who are experienced scientists and researchers. During the final week of RSI, students prepare written and oral presentations on their research projects.
Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars Program
The Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) program is an interactive on-line science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning experience, highlighted by a seven-day residential summer academy at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. Students selected to participate in the program are immersed in NASA-related research through interaction with scientists, engineers and technologists. The program is a partnership between the Virginia Space Grant Consortium and NASA Langley Research Center with assistance from the Virginia Department of Education.
