Senior Medicine Opportunities
City of Hope's Eugene and Ruth Roberts Summer Student Academy
This program gives curious and hardworking students the opportunity to learn about science by actually doing it. Unlike traditional high school or college classes where the course of study is entirely determined by the instructor, City of Hope’s summer program students select their own research project according to their individual areas of interest. Selected participants then spend 10 weeks working full-time as a member of a biomedical research team.
Doernbecher Children's Hospital Pediatrics Summer Student Internship Program
The Dept. of Pediatrics Summer Student Internship Program is an intensive 10-week program designed for students to gain valuable experience in the field of pediatric research. These internships are laboratory research-based positions. Students will work on a project under the advisement of a faculty member. Additionally, students will meet with other interns twice a week in a group setting. Students will take turns presenting journal articles from
pediatric-related scientific literature. Students will also learn about research that is ongoing in the Dept. of Pediatrics. At the end of the 10-week program, students are expected to present the results of their projects at a poster session. This opportunity allows students to talk about their results with faculty members and to brainstorm about the next steps to take with their projects.
CDC Disease Detective Camp (DDC)
This is an educational program started by CDC′s David J. Sencer CDC Museum in 2005 as a mechanism for developing a public health camp curriculum for state and county health departments. The camp is open to upcoming high school juniors and seniors and is held at CDC's headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.
Discover Genomics Science Education Program
The Internship Program provides opportunities to inspire young scientists and other science professionals to work in all areas of the Institute. Interns are
assigned to a mentor who is a member of the Institute's faculty or senior staff. A research program/work experience is tailored to each participant's education level and capabilities. Interns are required to present a summary of their research/work experience to the Institute's staff at the conclusion of their Internship.
Magee-Women's Research Institute and Foundation
The High School Summer Internship Program provides current high school juniors and seniors with the opportunity to participate in basic or clinical research projects with the goal of promoting interest in biomedical research as a potential career. During the summer internship program, students attend weekly scientific seminars to enhance their knowledge of the different aspects of research, particularly that relating to women’s and infants’ health. In addition, they attend informal lunch meetings where junior and senior investigators discuss biomedical science as a career. At the end of the program, the students present their work via a PowerPoint presentation to the other participants as well as to MWRI faculty and their associates.
National Institutes of Health Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research
Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the
leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. The NIH consists of the 240-bed Mark O. Hatfield Clinical
Research Center and more than 1200 laboratories/research projects located on the main campus in Bethesda, MD and the surrounding area as well as in Baltimore and Frederick, MD; Research Triangle Park, NC; Hamilton, MT; Framingham, MA; and Detroit, MI.
Summer Research Fellowships @ Mt. Desert Island Biological Laboratory
The High School Research Fellowship program is a hands-on, mentored laboratory experience for high school students interested in biology, medicine, or research.
Stanford School of Medicine Summer Research Program
The program is an eight-week program in which high school students from diverse backgrounds are invited to perform basic research with Stanford Faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students and researchers on a medically-oriented project. The goals of the program include increasing interest in biological sciences and medicine in high school students, helping students to understand how scientific research is performed, and increasing diversity of students and researchers in the sciences.
